archaic \ar- ka-ik\ adjective 1. having the characteristics of the language of the past and surviving chiefly in specialized uses.
archaish \ar- ka-ish\ fake word 1. what you might name a wine when you replace one of the four grape varieties with a related variety in a spiritual successor to "archaic," a wine made to honor the field blends that anchor our local winemaking history.
Our Wine Club Manager, Catherine, kept encouraging (bugging) Lucas to make archaic again or create a version using Syrah instead of Petite Sirah. Frustrated, Lucas explained that it couldn't be the same since the vineyard no longer exists, and it wouldn't truly be "archaic"—it would be "archaISH" if he substituted Syrah for Petite Sirah. They both looked at each other, laughed, and said, "We totally have to do that!" And so, the new archaISH Red Blend was created to fill the void left by one of our old favorite wines.
Note: The archaic red blend was a field blend of equal parts Zinfandel, Grenache, Carignane, and Petite Sirah (Lucas' least favorite varietal to work with).
